Ahh, can it be Thanksgiving vacation now?

Today was the day of the costume contest. I did okay. I didn't place like I did last year with Sabriel, but that's okay. There were some good costumes out there. However,  am very embarrassed to say the Lady of Lorien got beat by an i-pod with headphones, a shower, and Robin Hood with the Merry Not-Men. I mean, they were good, it's just odd to say you got beat by a shower. Haha, I had fun at any rate. :)
Maybe I can even find a better photo later.
Tomorrow I'm going ice-skating, yay! At 4 I'm leaving on my first ever speech meet, so I hope that'll be fun. It's not really a meet, I think it's called a workshop. We say our pieces and get judged, but no official scoring or anything. At the moment, I am only doing a drama, a bit from Madeleine L'Engle's A Ring of Endless Light. It's okay, but I think I'm more of a humorous than a dramatic. I'll go to the workshop and see how my piece does, but I'm hoping to switch to a neat little Calvin and Hobbes poetry piece. I did it last night and I really liked it. We'll see.

Another Best Day- this time listen to Airplanes

It was fun. I had so much fun at Macy's, carving pumpkins and roasting hotdogs and going to Jayme's shop. It was a lot of fun. Then I went to RED with Alex and it was great. It was so funny and Helen Mirren had a sniper rifle and a machine gun. It was great. I love that movie. I think it was the best thing since Avatar.
Haha, get the pun?

What is on the clock?

Another pun!

The movie's highlight

She was one of the people in it.

Nice photo effects.

Notice how each level is a continuation.

He looks kinda familiar... was he in Iron Man or something?

Yes.
At any rate, I think this is my kind of chick-flick. Yes, I've said I love Letters to Juliet, but you must admit, it was a bit sappy. Okay, yes this was a character-driven movie, but it was funny and exciting and Helen Mirren and it was a bit chick-flicky. I'd like to go again.

UPDATE: Yay! More people I know saw this movie!

The Best Day- Listen to the song while you read this :)

I'm feeling about this happy.

I was at church for lunch today and it was a soup and salad thing and I went there with mum and it was really nice. I ended up with that kinda warm, fuzzy feeling you get from church and happiness.

Tonight was closing night. It was AMAZING!!!! I managed to get my entire speech out correctly, I didn't skip lines, AMAZING! Jimmy got his glasses knocked off, they flew across the stage and into the crowd. He totally ad-libbed "Oh, my blasted glasses! Ahhh." in his Kokintz accent and rubbed his face. Then Jacinda picked them back up and handed them to him. He leaned over and blindly picked them up and pointed vaguely in Jacinda's area. "Zank you fery much." The crowd exploded. When it was quiet again, it was so hard to stay in character and finally Melinda said in her Mrs. Bascom voice "Where were we again?" It was so much fun! After our bows, Melinda called Mrs. Danforth up and Bailey gave her a beautiful bouquet of roses. Sharon flew the banner we made for Mrs. Danforth and we said our thank yous for so many years. The crown gave us a standing ovation. We went into the crowd and I got a wonderful miniature rose-bush. Alex asked me to go to the movies with him on Saturday. I can't see R movies, so I hope we'll see RED or Secretariat. We sat around for a while after and signed programs. My favorites were from Trevor, who promised more do-wop jokes and Carter whose campaign motto is Luke's "Vote for Reed, Don't do Weed!" Mrs. Danforth talked to me and said I've come far from what I was. I can't recall exactly what she said, but it made me happy; it was good. I just felt to good. I got up and hugged someone. I think it was Bianca. I could hear Sharon laughing, but it was a friendly "I'm with you" laugh. I said to Bianca "I'm just so happy right now." Now I'm feeling so nostalgic, sitting here in my tights. They're the ones I wore last year at state drama when I was a skunk-fairy. I've come so far. We all have.

I mean, I have all this homework and tomorrow is going to be a crazy day, but it's okay right now. I have a bubble of happiness and warmth and friends and it's okay.

I have a Christmas colored hand

It seems like so long since I was on here...what was it? About a week? My schedule was a bit tight last week, so, yeah. We had really long rehearsals for The Mouse That Roared and when I got home, I just did homework. Tonight is closing night, so by Sunday I'm going to have more free time than I know what to do with. I think I'm going to get some photos later, so I'll post them (probably in the wee hours of tomorrow) for you guys. Any ideas for Nanowrimo? Tell me! Oooh, by the way, I finished Galadriel. I ended up with a strawberry-blonde wig, but other than that it's pretty good. I think I'll pin its bangs back, maybe in a braid, photos later.

AAAAAAHHHHHMYYYGOSHHHHHHHHHH!

Yes! It is that exciting! No, it's not the fact I only attended 1.5 classes today. No, it's not the fact Shakespeare in the Schools will be here tomorrow. No, it isn't even because Monday is a full dress and make-up rehearsal. Not even because my Galadriel costume is coming along. SOMEBODY GAVE ME TWO (count them-TWO!)REVIEWS ON FANFICTION!! Okay, now that seems a bit silly, but I was really excited. Today was an okay Wednesday after all.

Haha, I ♥ Google

So just now, I googled "Sabriel Costume". I wanted to see if mine would come up. I didn't see it. I kept scrolling through pages, and they made me laugh so hard.
From Beka Cooper,

To the extreme costume I told you about,

To someone's totally legit and awesome costume (of Sabriel),

To Spanish Bart,

And something that I'm assuming is a Dragon Con sign,

To miniature Gondor,

Harry Potter boookmarks and

A Harry Potter game,

To Tamora Pierce.
I don't understand sometimes....

Sudden thought. I have strange Halloween costumes; here's a list of some of them.
Cat
Star
Amelia Earhart
Jellyfish
Aquarium
Fork
Sabriel
Galadriel

October

Today, I've decided I'll tell you how to make a Sabriel costume. Last year, I could hardly find anything aside from Dragon-Con people who were hand-embroidering silver keys on blue velvet. Sorry, I can't do that.
Here's what you need.
1-set blue robes (I got graduation robes from a thrift store)
1-black wig (Walgreen's)(Assuming you don't have black/dark brown hair)
2-belts (Preferably brown or black, if not, wrap the belt in brown/black tissue paper.)
1-bottle silver paint (I used acrylic)
1-sponge (clean, please)
Cardboard to put inside blue robes (so paints doesn't sink through both sides)
Scissors
________________________________________
Those are the things you really need. From here on, you can vary. I'll tell you what I used, then what I think would be really cool.
My Stuff:
1-White-ish shirt
1-pair gray leggings (I have star spangled ones from Wet Seal.)
1-pair shoes, pref. high-tops (I didn't have boots, so I used high-tops)
Black tissue paper
7-popsicle sticks
7-dixie cups
Masking tape
1-small piece (4x6 ish) of cardboard
Green marker
Wrapping paper tube
Scotch tape
A few inches of sting or yarn
Facepaint or watercolors
________________________________________
This is the "Plan B" idea
2-pairs black tights (get cheap ones)
1/2 yd-long lace trim
Safety pins, duct tape, or black thread and needle. Pick one.
________________________________________
Abhorsen Robes
 1.  Put cardboard in blue robes.
 2. Cut your sponge in the shape of a key.
 3. Now use the sponge and silver paint to make the Abhorsen robes.
 4. After one side has dried, flip and do the other side. Don't forget the sleeves.
 5. This is personal preference,  but I don't think Sabriel could fight in long robes. I cut them off just below knee-length and make a slit most of the way up the thigh. I edged the raw edges in masking tape. It looked pretty neat, I think.

Armour
You can use your gray leggings and white shirt for the Abhorsen under-clothes, or you can go fancier.
 1. Cut a head hole and cut the feet off one pair of tights. LEAVE ONE PAIR ALONE!!
 2. Put the "shirt" (mutilated tights) and regular tights on. Don't wear anything underneath, except underwear you can get paint on.
 3. Paint scales all over the front of your outfit.
 4. Wait for it to dry, then put the outfit on backward, ie so the unpainted side is now on the front.
 5. Paint that side.
 6. After it's all dry (try to hang it up and let it air-dry over night) sew/tape/staple/hot-glue/pin the lace trim around the head hole and wrists.

Boots
Do this the day you wear your costume, after your armour is on.
 1. Put on your high-tops (or other shoes)
 2. Cut two "bill" shaped pieces of black tissue paper to fit over the tops and sides of your shoes.
 3. Tape them on to your shoes.
 4. Cut a rectangle long enough to wrap around the upper outside part of your high-top. That's your ankle and lower calf. Cut it wide enough to go 1/3 to 1/2 of the way up your calf.
 5.  Tape it together with scotch tape. Tape it onto your shoe too, so it actually looks like a boot.

Bells and Sword
My bells were made the night before and I had no real materials. The sword was semi-decent.
1. Cut a hole in the bottom of each dixie cup.
2. Stick a popsicle stick through each hole and tape them in place.
3. Paint the whole thing silver.
4. Put on a belt. (I used one of my dad's belts for extra length.) Buckle it on like a bandolier.
5. Tape the bells onto the belt, approximately where you want them. It won't be perfect.
6. Cut your 4x6 cardboard into a hilt shape. I painted mine gold and glued in a plastic emerald, but you can go how you like. If you want to be super-accurate, don't paint silver with a emerald. That's Nehima.
 7. Crumple the top of your wrapping paper tube a little, and tape the hilt and sword together.
 8. You can paint the sword silver with charter marks. I just did charter marks, since I was slapping it together, and it still looked fine.
 9. Tie the sword hilt onto your belt. (Not the bandolier.)

Other
 1. Don't forget your black wig, if you need it. My eyebrows were too light, so I got some face paint and darkened them.
 2. You can put on a thin wash of white face paint if you're tan or anything.
 3. Another accuracy detail. Get gray face paint (or watercolors are okay) and paint a circular charter mark on your forehead.
 4. I had to get a "burlesque" wig. That's one with a big Nancy Drew-like curl on top. I just got a thin gray scarf and tied it down. If you don't have that problem, don't worry.
  5. Have fun and make sure the person who announces you knows how to say "Sabriel" and "necromancer". Don't bother trying to explain who "Abhorsen" is. I had loads of fun and for the rest of the week people would look at me and say "Hey, you were that necromancer person right? What is a necromancer anyways?" :)

The Sabriel costume.
The tissue paper boots are fun I think. They have a used and battered look. The blue robes used to be ankle length. You can't really see the sword, but if you look by the last of the bells.... Make sure the bells are firmly taped on. Mine had a tendency to slide out.

You could always go as Harriet Potter.

Star spangled leggings

Tips and Tricks
1. Make sure your bells are firmly taped on.
2. Try wearing dark red lipstick. Not much, just enough so lighten your skin tone and make your lips visible.
3. If you are light-haired, wear black mascara. You might not notice, but your eyelashes are probably lighter than a dark-haired person's eyelashes.
4. Tell me how it went (give comments). Despite the fact no one knew what a necromancer was, I got first in my category at our school's costume contest.
5. Have fun and be confident. It won't work if you are shy or embarrassed. Just do it! :)

My life is mostly in order....okay, that was a lie

I guess I've decided I'll go for Speech and Debate this year and I'll do Fall/Spring Drama and Fall/Spring Tennis. Fall tennis is over. I'm midway through Fall Drama. I think I'll go for state as well, maybe under monologue or duet and makeup. Speech and Debate is 4 hours a week, probably poetry and duet, possibly monologue. Basketball is probably a no-go, that's okay. I'll keep biking and check out the library to see if a page position is open. Spring Drama will start in March and I don't know if I'll go techie again or if I'll actually try out. Spring Tennis- I'm going to shoot for varsity. I think I can do it. If I keep practicing, I can challenge Jenny or Taylor. I'm going to have to work to stay better than Cierra. She's gotten a lot better. If our levels all stay roughly equal, I'll be able to make first JV, at the minimum.

I have a friend, and she's having a masquerade/semi-formal party. I think I can go as a fairy. If I make wings (cardboard, paint, glitter, string) and buy some fake eyelashes, I could do that. I'd use my homecoming dress.

Agh. Why must life be so complicated? Why?! Aggh. I think I'll go to bed now.

UPDATE:
I couldn't end my night on such a confused note. I've decided to talk about food. On Tuesday, I need to bring a 'sweet' to English. Preferably chocolate. There is also a vegan girl in my class. So I was thinking Chocolate Zucchini Muffins with applesauce instead of butter and either no chocolate or carob (which I don't think I'll be able to get).

I looked it up and semisweet or dark chocolate "*can* be vegan, but you should check for milk ingredients" I'll check and then go from there.

We have drama practice on Monday, and it'll be over lunch, so Mrs. Danforth is ordering pizza (Have you seen Domino's online thingy? I don't know whether to call it epic or creeper when it lets you make your pizza and says "Jeremy is making your pizza". I suppose it could be worse, it could say "Conrad is making your pizza".) Getting back from my speech-making.... we can bring food to practice and I really want to make mini-piroshkis. Piroshkis are a cabbage/potatoe turnover. (Agh! Today is scattered. I was--no. On subject. Okay, (what was I thinking? hold on....) Oh yeah! We were just discussing if you spell potato 'potatoe' or 'potato' and tomatoe 'tomato' or 'tomatoe') (Piroshkis) They are really good. If you want, Claire, you can come over and make some with me sometime. I wanted to make piroshkis for practice, but they're huge, like dinner-sized, so I'm going to make bite-sized. Wish me luck! :)

I can't decide between speech and basketball-help!

A few of my friends really want me to do speech. I came to the meeting today, and it sounds really fun. They meet every Tuesday and Thursday with twelve meets between November 1st and March 19th. I would have to practice 4 hours a week and make 6+ of the meets.

I want to do girls' basketball too. I enjoy basketball and it would be a good winter sport between the tennis seasons. Basketball doesn't start until November 15 and ends March 12th. Practice would be everyday, most likely right after school for ~2 hours. There might be morning practice occasionally.

There's also nordic skiing, which I did last year. Nordic is cross-country. This year there's only (definitely) three guys on the team. I don't know any of them very well, and skiing was a huge commitment last year. I might try it again, since I really liked it, but probably not this year.

So, there's three things I can do. I suppose I could take up speech and when basketball rolls around I could go to the initial meeting and see if I could go make both teams. Tell me, what do you think?

Elizabeth George teaches me more than school does

Elizabeth George, author of the Inspector Lynley Mysteries, teaches me more than school does. I looked up four or five different words I didn't know just now. In my first hour class, I carried PVC pipes to storage. In second hour, I worked on matrix addition. Okay, I guess I learned something there. In French I wrote a Halloween story about zombies, ogres, witches, dragons, and a house. In my last class, I watched the first couple minutes of The Old Man and the Sea, before I got totally bored and started reading With No One As Witness under the desk. However, I am having fun in drama.
My lines:
To the President, Congress, and People of the United States of America, Greetings.
The Duchy of Grand Fenwick has been an independent nation since 1370 AD, and WHEREAS the principle support of the duchy has been a unique wine known as Pinot Grand Fenwick, and WHEREAS an ignoble imitation of this superior wine is being produced and sold at half the cost by the state of California, and WHEREAS the sale of this spurious product threatens the livelihood of the duchy, therefore be it RESOLVED that the Duchy of Grand Fenwick holds the sale of this wine an act of aggression against the duchy, therefore be it RESOLVED Grand Fenwick does here and now declare that a state of war exists between itself and the United States of America.
